Running Race for Winter Olympics
Sebastian Coe is an important person in sports. He is the president of World Athletics. He has a new idea for the Winter Olympics.
Coe wants to add cross-country running to the Winter Olympics. This is a race where people run outside in nature. It can happen in snow or cold weather.
The Winter Olympics will be in France in 2030. Coe wants the race to start there. Maybe it can also happen in Salt Lake City in 2034.
Why is this a good idea? Winter Olympics sports are usually for cold countries. Not many African countries can join. But African runners are very good at running races. This new race can help African countries join the Winter Olympics.
Cross-country running was in the Summer Olympics before. It was there until 1924. Then it stopped because the race in Paris was too hot. Many runners got very tired and sick. Now, if the race is in winter, it will be cold. The runners will be safe.
Kirsty Coventry is the new president of the International Olympic Committee. Coe says she likes new ideas. She wants to make the Olympics better.
To add this race, the Olympic rules must change. The change is simple. It will say that winter sports can be in the Winter Olympics.
Coe is also excited about the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. He ran there in 1984 and won a gold medal. Track and field will happen in the first week in 2028.
There are also new running events coming. One is a world treadmill championship. People will run on machines and compete.
Coe wants running to grow around the world. He thinks these changes will help more people love the sport.
