Trump Cancels Beef Tariffs After Price Complaints

US President Donald Trump has removed tariffs on Australian beef and many other food products. The decision comes after American voters complained about high food prices.

Trump first announced a 10% tariff on Australian beef on April 2, 2025. He said Australia doesn't allow American beef into their country, so America should stop buying Australian beef. "They won't take any of our beef. They don't want it because they don't want it to affect their farmers," Trump said in April.

However, beef prices kept going up in America. Ground beef increased from $5.67 to $6.33 per pound in just 12 months - that's 13.5% more expensive. American shoppers were very unhappy about this.

Trump signed a new executive order that removes tariffs on many agricultural products. These include coffee, tea, tropical fruits, cocoa, bananas, oranges, tomatoes, beef, and other items. The order works backwards too, so companies can get refunds on tariffs they already paid.

Australia exports more than $2 billion of beef to the United States every year. Most of this is grass-fed beef, which Americans use to make hamburgers. American beef production is falling because of drought and smaller herds.

The Republican Party faced pressure after losing recent elections in Virginia and New Jersey. Many Americans are worried about the cost of living, which was one of Trump's campaign promises to fix.

Trade adviser Peter Navarro said the government is working hard on "an attack plan to deal with beef prices." Trump also made trade deals with Switzerland and some South American countries.
